- Romanian employers grant a special leave of up to 183 days in a year to their employees on grounds of health-related circumstances.
- To be eligible to avail the sick leave, employees should have contributed to the national health insurance system for at least six months during the preceding calendar year.
- The employees may seek an additional sick leave of 90 days in case of complicated diseases.
- During this period, the employees receive sick pay at 100% and 75% of their regular salary, depending on the seriousness of the issue.
- The employer must pay for the first 5 days of sick leave, and for the remaining days, the employer can be reimbursed by the state for the amount paid.
Maternity leave in Romania
- Female employees in Romania are entitled to a maternity leave of 126 calendar days.
- The employees are paid partially by the employer and the social security fund during this period.
Maternal risk leave
- Employers who cannot provide safe working conditions to women, or the nature or environment of work can pose a threat to the health of the woman and the child, should grant a maternal risk leave.
- This leave may last up to 120 calendar days.
- During this period, employees are paid partial compensation.
Paternity leave in Romania
- Romanian employers also grant a paternity leave of 5 working days to new fathers. It is to be taken within 8 weeks of childbirth.
- They are also entitled to an additional leave of 10 days if they are attending an infant-care course.
- During this period, employees shall receive 100% of their earnings, with no upper limit on payment.
